On March 1, 2025, Kronospan announced the acquisition of the ZG Timber sawmill in Sebes, previously owned by Ziegler Group. This transaction, set to be completed by mid-year, ensures business continuity and safeguards 500 existing jobs. Kronospan, present in the Romanian market since 1999, strengthened its presence in Sebes with the 2004 acquisition of the particleboard (PAL) and MDF factory from Gruppo Frati in a €250 million transaction.
In 2023, Romania`s wood industry experienced a production decline of 10% to 20%, reaching a 33% contraction in July compared to the same period the previous year. This downturn was driven by high domestic prices and decreased demand in international markets. Regarding international trade, Germany was Romania`s main commercial partner in 2023, with exports totaling €19.4 billion and imports reaching €17.5 billion.
Kronospan`s acquisition of the ZG Timber factory reflects the trend of consolidation in Romania`s wood industry, offering prospects for stability and growth in the wood processing sector.
