Belgian wood products manufacturer Unilin has commercially launched MDF panels with up to 25% recycled wood fibers, marking an important development for the global wood industry, wood-based panel manufacturing and the circular economy.
According to the company, this is the world`s first commercial MDF offering of its kind, made possible by industrial-scale recycling of used MDF and HDF panels.
The new technology could reduce dependence on virgin wood fibers and transform how wood waste from furniture, laminate flooring and other manufactured wood products is recovered and reused.
🪵 EUR 20 Million Investment in Industrial MDF Recycling
Unilin began developing its patented Osiris wood fiber recycling technology in 2021, focusing on recovering reusable fibers from discarded MDF and HDF panels.
Following pilot-scale testing, the company invested approximately EUR 20 million in industrial facilities at Bazeilles, France.
The new recycling installation has a designed annual capacity of 70,000 metric tonnes of recycled wood fibers and supports the production of new MDF and HDF panels.
According to Unilin`s estimates, extending the life cycle of recovered wood fibers could postpone approximately 130,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions annually by keeping carbon stored in wood products for longer.
These figures reflect the manufacturer`s estimates and should not be interpreted as independently verified permanent carbon emission reductions.
🌳 How Does Unilin`s Osiris Wood Recycling Technology Work?
Recycling MDF panels has historically been a major technical challenge for the wood processing industry because wood fibers are bonded with resins and adhesives, making recovery difficult without damaging the fibers.
Unilin`s patented Osiris process uses steam treatment and purification techniques to separate and recover wood fibers from used MDF and HDF boards.
The main recycling stages include:
According to Unilin, testing indicates that recovered fibers can meet the mechanical performance requirements for manufacturing new wood-based panels.

📈 What Does 25% Recycled Wood Content Mean for MDF Prices?
Unilin now offers MDF panels containing up to 25% recycled content allocated through an ISCC PLUS-certified mass balance system, available upon request.
Under this certification approach, recycled content is allocated through a documented material balance. Consequently, the declared recycled percentage does not necessarily represent the exact physical proportion of recycled fibers in every individual MDF panel.
From an economic perspective, industrial MDF recycling could reduce manufacturers` dependence on virgin wood raw materials while creating new opportunities in wood waste collection, sorting and fiber processing.
However, Unilin has not announced a general reduction in MDF prices directly resulting from this technology.
The commercial competitiveness of recycled MDF will depend on collection costs, energy prices, transportation, waste sorting, recycling efficiency and the availability of suitable recovered wood.

🌍 Impact on the Furniture Industry and European Wood Market
The introduction of MDF containing recycled wood fibers could create new opportunities for furniture manufacturers, decorative panel producers, laminate flooring manufacturers and suppliers of engineered wood products.
Recovering fibers from end-of-life wood products may reduce the amount of material sent to incineration and extend the useful life of valuable wood raw materials.
Unilin plans to increase the use of recycled fibers throughout its production operations and make the Osiris recycling technology available to other wood-based panel manufacturers through licensing.
In the medium term, industrial MDF recycling could influence:
However, the scale of these market effects will depend on future investment, recycling capacity expansion and the development of reliable, separately collected wood waste streams.
🌳 New Opportunities for European Wood Manufacturers
For European wood processing companies, Unilin`s technology represents an important example of how recovered wood can be transformed into higher-value industrial raw materials.
Furniture manufacturers, MDF producers, wood recycling companies and waste management operators could benefit from developing dedicated collection and processing systems for discarded MDF, HDF and other recyclable wood products.
The availability of industrial recycling technology could also encourage new investment in wood waste sorting, fiber recovery and the manufacturing of recycled wood-based panels.
From a broader sustainability perspective, keeping wood fibers in durable products for longer may contribute to more efficient material use and reduced reliance on newly harvested timber.
